Implementation guide: Screening for food security in school-based health centers

Addressing food insecurity supports a child’s academic achievement, health, and overall well-being. As trusted hubs within schools, school-based health centers (SBHCs) can act early and effectively to identify students facing hunger and connect families to the resources and supports they need. This document serves as a guide to the successful implementation of food security screening in your SBHC.

The set of three video tutorials below provide additional information and context for the implementation guide. Download the guide and follow along with the videos to learn more about planning and implementing food insecurity screening in SBHCs. For additional support in exploring and implementing food insecurity screening and food access referrals in your SBHC, contact Katherine Bissett (katherine@osbha.com).

Taking time to assess your SBHC’s readiness before launching a food security screening initiative sets the stage for meaningful impact. When the right supports, partnerships, and resources are in place, screening can be a powerful tool to connect students and families with the care and services they need.

If your assessment finds your SBHC is ready to implement a food security initiative, review best practices, identify available resources and partners, and choose a screening tool. Validated screening tools include Hunger Vital Sign, PRAPARE, and RAAPS

When developing a screening workflow to implement in your SBHC, key steps include engaging students and families, training all SBHC staff, and designing a plan for patient and family follow-up. Before you start screening, be sure you're familiar with federal/state (e.g., SNAP) and local (e.g., food banks) resources available for referral.
